Student, Cohort 3 wmurphy@cts.edu

Minister Whittney Murphy, a native of Cleveland, Ohio, graduated from Butler University in 2011 with a triple major, earning her Bachelors of Arts in International Studies, Political Science, and French. She is currently pursuing a dual degree for a Master of Divinity (M.Div.) and a Master of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling (MACMHC). Whittney is very passionate about the many facets of societal social justice, but specifically takes an interest in the social, economic, and political liberation of the Black LGBTQI (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Questioning/Queer, and Intersex) community in Indianapolis and beyond.

Her passion has been centered around youth empowerment, specifically LGBTQI youth, who have unfortunately been neglected on multiple levels in our society. Whittney currently serves at the Indiana Youth Group (IYG) as a volunteer and Group Mentor for the Queer Youth of Color as well as a Co-Advisor to the Gay Straight Alliance at the Indianapolis Metropolitan School.

Whittney is a part of the United Progressive Pentecostal Church (UPPC) and currently serves at The Powerhouse Church of Indianapolis.

Beyond seminary, Whittney wants to use her theological education and mental health training to further assist in empowering youth to be “social shifters” in their lives, communities, and beyond. This can take shape in a variety of ways, however, and Whittney is simply enjoying the journey for now.
