PEN Awards eighteen new grants

The Pastoral Excellence Network is pleased to announce that as a result of our June adjudication, PEN grants have been awarded to 18 organizations who are initiating, expanding or collaborating on pastoral excellence projects. The grants range in size from $12,000 to $25,000 depending on the nature and scope of the project and the needs of the applicant, in accordance with our funding guidelines.  

Three of the grants will support new Pastoral Residency Programs for new clergy who will spend their first call in an intentional mentoring church setting, usually for two years. Each of these new residencies attended one of PEN’s Pastoral Residency Schools this year.    

The grantees and projects funded are:

  • Ministers Council of the American Baptist Church, USA: Strengthened in Sanctuary: Enhancing Leadership through the Family System
  • Columbia Theological Seminary Center for Lifelong Learning: Fostering a Community of Practice among Faculty Coaches
  • Creekside Community Church: Pastoral Residency Program
  • Eastern PA Conference, UMC Board of Pension: Partners in Resilience
  • First Baptist Church, Greensboro: Pastoral Residency Program
  • Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary: SACRED Sisters: Clergywomen Peer Learning Experience
  • Metropolitan Community Churches: Inspiring and Supporting Pastoral Excellence in MCC through Clergy Communities of Practice
  • Nazarene Theological Seminary: Mentoring for Ministry
  • Northern California-Nevada Conference, UCC: Launch for Communities of Practice in the NCNCCUCC
  • Oregon Synod, ELCA: Ecumenical Young Leader Collectives
  • Southeast Conference, UCC: Start-up of Clergy Communities of Practice
  • Second Presbyterian Church, Richmond: Pastoral Residency in Urban Ministry with Young Adults
  • United Church of Christ- COMPASS: UCC Facilitator and Train-the-Trainer Training
  • Venilia Gardens, Inc: 23inMe Clergy Advocacy and Leadership Development Program
  • Virginia Theological Seminary: Cross-Cultural Peer Discernment for Ministry
  • Western North Dakota Synod, ELCA: We Are Our Colleague’s Keepers:  WISE Groups
  • Wilshire Baptist Church: Preaching Practicum for Pastoral Residents
  • Young Clergy Women Project: The Young Clergy Women Project’s Mentoring Initiative

The total amount awarded during this funding cycle is $358,497.
